Live video: Phantogram

February 27, 2010

Phantogram
I’m so excited to see Phantogram at Sasquatch! festival this year! They’re also coming to the Biltmore on May 4th, which would also be an interesting show to check them out at.

Phantogram is a fairly new band from Greenwich, New York, and they’re very electronic. Not in a hardcore way. There’s something fresh about them.

Formerly known as Charlie Everywhere, this band has a taste of sampling in some of their songs. This kind of reminds me of hip-hop and I like it…a lot.

Listen to a nice live version of their song “When I’m Small” and get the original below.

Therapy with Electrelane

February 26, 2010

To be honest, I’m at a loss of words at the moment so this post won’t be very long. I feel disoriented from the chaotic, surreal environment downtown. This isn’t Vancouver and it’s weird because I’m not on vacation.

The one song that has given me some comfort in the past week is a song by a band that doesn’t exist anymore. I kept forgetting I had this song on my playlist but once it came on, it would instantly relax me, and still does. The band’s name was Electrelane (from the UK) and the song is called “In Berlin.”

This song is very soft with a superb keyboard melody.

Music Video: Caribou’s “Odessa”

February 19, 2010

After Caribou won the Polaris Prize award in 2008, I quickly became intrigued with the creation of this artist. Surprisingly, Caribou is essentially one person, Dan Snaith (from Ontario). Snaith began recording music when he was 14.

Caribou has a new album called Swim scheduled to release on April 20th. The first single of the album is “Odessa.” This song exceeded my expectations big time. What I mean by this is: it makes me want to dance. The music from Caribou’s last album, Andorra, was really good but I listened to it while chilling out at home. “Odessa” is a song I would definitely jam out to on the dance floor. I love it.

Today, the video for “Odessa” was released. Even though I expected some dancing in it, this video somehow still suits this song perfectly; maybe this song is more versatile than I thought. The video is a beautiful montage of BC’s interior and an exhausted runaway. Time to boast: my good friend, Julia Lawton, plays the “exhausted runaway” and she did a great job. Check it out below!

Jónsi (Sigur Rós) Solo Project, Go

February 13, 2010

Jón Þór Birgisson, lead singer and guitarist of the Icelandic band Sigur Rós, has started a solo project that goes by his nickname, Jónsi. The debut album is called Go.

So far, I’ve just heard the song “Go Do.” It emits the same feel as the song “Gobbledigook” by Sigur Rós. Both are very playful and upbeat. The two songs would be perfect companionship during a spontaneous jog through a green meadow.

Something that was kind of exciting at first: “Go Do” is in English. But to be honest, I still can’t really make out what he’s singing. His voice is just really nice to listen to no matter which language the lyrics are written in.

The video is a good one to check out too. It includes freeing birds, rocking out on a suitcase and the ocean; an all-around great music video.

New Song/Remix: Paradise Circus

February 12, 2010

Word on the Internet: Massive Attack‘s new album, Heligoland, was released February 9. I first heard the remix of “Paradise Circus” featuring Hope Sandoval by Gui Boratto. This is a nice remix but it doesn’t stray too far from the original. It’s a little eerier and the original is a little dreamier, if that makes any sense. The remix has guitar and eliminates some of the loud clapping that is in the original. But I like that clapping. I feel like it gives the song a stronger structure.

Hope Sandoval has an extremely sexy voice in this song. I was pretty surprised to discover she’s in her forties. Don’t mean to offend anyone with that comment but I totally expected this voice to belong to a younger lady.

I also listened to another song on the album, “Babel” featuring Martina Topley-Bird. I must say, I’m very excited to hear the rest of this soft electro masterpiece.

For now, here’s the remix by Gui Boratto.

The best "Reckoner" remix

February 6, 2010

Nosaj Thing is hitting up Fortune Sound Club this Tuesday. I’m more than excited for this show. I’ve heard many of Nosaj Thing’s remixes and even though they’re slow for the most part, they’re put together wonderfully and bring me back to reality.

Sneak peak: you won’t regret listening to this if you like Radiohead and remixing. Best “Reckoner” remix I’ve heard so far.

La Roux coming back to Vancouver

February 6, 2010

Thanks to a dear friend of mine, I now know that La Roux is coming back to Vancouver on April 18! I’m so happy that she is playing at a better venue this time around (the Commodore Ballroom). As many of you know, I’m not a big fan of the Biltmore’s structure, which is where she played last time she came to Vancouver. Since this last concert, her musical reputation has grown exponentially so I would suggest getting tickets as soon as possible.

Here’s a remix by Le Castle Vania to hold you, and myself, off until the show.
